In 188o he married Sibyl Marcia Grahalh, who died in 1887, leaving him with two daughters. He inherited his See also:father's See also:literary tastes, and published Stray Verses in 189o, besides other See also:miscellaneous literary See also:work. A Liberal in politics, he became private secretary to Lord See also:Granville when secretary of See also:state for See also:foreign affairs (1883–1884), and in 1886 was made a lord-inwaiting. In the Liberal See also:administration of 1892–1895 he was lord-See also:lieutenant for See also:Ireland, having Mr See also:John See also:Morley as See also:chief secretary. In 1895 he was created 1st earl of Crewe, his maternal grandfather, the 2nd See also:Baron Crewe, having See also:left him his See also:heir. In 1899 he married See also:Lady See also:Margaret See also:Primrose, daughter of the 5th earl of See also:Rosebery. In 1905 he became lord See also:president of the See also:council in the Liberal See also:government; and in 1908, in Mr See also:Asquith's See also:cabinet, he became secretary of state for the colonies and Liberal See also:leader in the See also:House of Lords.
