He subsequently became a See also:merchant in his native See also:city and See also:rose to a position of importance in its business and See also:political See also:life. His See also:chief See also:interest, however, was inthe temperance question, and he See also:early attracted See also:attention as an ardent See also:champion of the See also:prohibition of the See also:sale of intoxicating drinks. He drafted the drastic Maine prohibitory See also:law of 1851. He was See also:mayor of Portland in 1851 and in 1855, and was a member of the Maine legislature in 1858-1859. He was twice wounded in the attack on See also:Port See also:Hudson, on the 27th of May 1863, and was taken prisoner, remaining eight months in Libby and other prisons before he was exchanged. After the war he devoted a See also:great See also:part of his time and See also:energy to the See also:extension of the prohibition See also:movement in See also:America and See also:England. Through his exertions the prohibitory See also:amendment was added to the Maine constitution in 1884. In 188o he was the See also:candidate of the See also:National Prohibition Party for See also:president, polling 10,305 votes. He died at Portland on the 2nd of See also:October 1897.
His Reminiscences were published at Portland in 1898.
