DUDERSTADT , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hanover, situated in a beautiful and fertile valley (formerly called Goldene See also:Mark) watered by the Hahle, and on the See also:rail-way Wulften-Leinefelde. Pop. (1905) 5327. It is an interesting See also:medieval town with many See also:ancient buildings. Notable are the two See also:Roman See also:Catholic churches, beautiful See also:Gothic edifices of the 14th See also:century, the See also:Protestant See also:church, and the handsome town-See also:hall. Its See also:chief See also:industries are woollen and See also:cotton manufactures, See also:sugar-refining and See also:cigar-making; it has also a See also:trade in singing-birds. Duderstadt was founded by See also:Henry I. (the See also:Fowler) in 929, passed later to the monastery of Quedlinburg, and then to See also:Brunswick. It was a member of the Hanseatic See also:League, and during the See also:Thirty Years' See also:War became a stronghold of the Imperialists. It was taken by See also:Duke See also:William of See also:Weimar in 1632; in 1761 its walls were dismantled, and, after being alternately Prussian and Hanoverian, it passed finally in 1866 with Hanover to See also:Prussia.
