LOUIS (1730-1812) , See also:French writer, was See also:born at See also:Tours, of See also:Protestant parents, on the 15th of See also:January 1730. He went to See also:London, where his See also:uncle was a jeweller, and there obtained a situation as See also:tutor in a private See also:family. In this position he learnt See also:Greek and See also:mathematics, and studied See also:oriental See also:languages, also See also:Italian and See also:Spanish. He took orders, and was appointed See also:chaplain and secretary to the See also:English See also:minister at the See also:court of See also:Turin in See also:October 1758. In 176o—1762 he was See also:charge d'affaires at Turin. See also:Lord See also:Bute, before retiring from See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
office in 1763, procured him a See also:pension. He again went to Turin as charge d'affaires; and during this second See also:mission he collected and published a See also:complete edition of the See also:works of See also:Leibnitz (See also:Geneva, 6 vols., 1768) and wrote his Recherches sur l'origine See also:des decouvertes attribuees aux modernes (1766). On his return to See also:England the See also:duke of See also:Northumberland procured him the living of Elsdon, in Northumberland, and made him tutor to his son. In 1775 he became a member of the French See also:Academy of See also:Inscriptions and a See also:fellow of the Royal Society. Dutens was for a third See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf. Icel. timi, Swed. timme, hour, Dan. time; from the root also seen in " tide," properly the time of between the flow and ebb of the sea, cf. O. Eng. getidan, to happen, " even-tide," &c.; it is not directly related to Lat. tempus)
