(11oo). He was one of the bishops elect whom See also:Anselm refused to consecrate (11o1) as having been nominated and invested by the See also:lay See also:power. During the investitures dispute Giffard was on friendly terms with Anselm, and See also:drew upon himself a See also:sentence of banishment through declining to accept See also:consecration from the See also:archbishop of See also:York (1103). He was, however, one of the bishops who pressed Anselm, in 11o6, to give way to the See also:king. He was consecrated after the See also:settlement of 1107. He became a See also:close friend of Anselm, aided the first See also:Cistercians to See also:settle in See also:England, and restored Winchester See also:cathedral with See also:great magnificence. See See also:Eadmer, Historic novorum, edited by M. See also:Rule (See also:London, 1884) ; and S. H. See also:Cass, Bishops of Winchester (London, 1827).
