In See also:August 1265 See also:Henry III. appointed him chancellor of England, and he was one of the arbitrators who See also:drew up the dictum de See also:Kenilworth in 1266. Later in this See also:year See also:Pope See also:Clement IV. named him See also:arch-bishop of York, and having resigned the chancellorship he was an able and diligent ruler of his see, although in spite of his See also:great See also:wealth he was frequently in pecuniary difficulties. When Henry III. died in See also:November 1272 the archbishopric of Canter-See also:bury was vacant, and consequently the great See also:seal was delivered to the archbishop of York, who was the See also:chief of the three regents who successfully governed the See also:kingdom until the return of See also:Edward I. in August 1274. Having again acted in this capacity during the See also:king's See also:absence in 1275, Giffard died in See also:April 1279, and was buried in his See also:cathedral. See See also:Fasti Eboracenses, edited by J. Raine (See also:London, 1863). Giffard's See also:Register from 1266 to 1279 has been edited for the See also:Surtees Society by W. See also:Brown.
