From See also:Glasgow University he went to Ballioi See also:College, See also:Oxford. He was admitted a member of the See also:Faculty of See also:Advocates, and soon became known as an eloquent See also:ant. successful pleader. In 1852 he was made See also:solicitor-See also:general for See also:Scotland in See also:Lord See also:Derby's first See also:ministry, three months later becoming Lord See also:Advocate. In 1858 he resumed this See also:office in Lord Derby's second See also:administration, being returned to the See also:House of See also:Commons as member for See also:Stamford. He was responsible for the See also:Universities of Scotland See also:Act of 1858, and in the same See also:year he was elevated to the See also:bench as lord See also:justice clerk. In 1867 he was made lord justice general of Scotland and lord See also:president of the See also:court of session, taking the See also:title of Lord Glencorse. Outside his judicial duties he was responsible for much useful public See also:work, particularly in the See also:department of higher See also:education. In 1869 he was elected See also:chancellor of Edinburgh University, having already been See also:rector of the university of Glasgow. He died on the 20th August 1891.
