When Catherine died in See also:exile in 1517 Henry succeeded her in her claim on Navarre, which was disputed by See also:Ferdinand I. king of See also:Spain; and under the See also:protection of Francis I. of See also:France he assumed the See also:title of king. After ineffectual conferences at See also:Noyon in 1516 and at See also:Montpellier in 1518, an active effort was made in 1521 to establish him in the de facto See also:sovereignty; but the See also:French troops which had seized the See also:country were ultimately expelled by the Spaniards. In 1525 Henry was taken prisoner at the See also:battle of See also:Pavia, but he contrived to See also:escape, and in 1526 married See also:Margaret, the sister of Francis I. and widow of See also:Charles, See also:duke of See also:Alencon. By her he was the See also:father of Jeanne d'Albret (d. 1572), and was consequently the grandfather of Henry IV. of France. Henry, who had some sympathy with the See also:Huguenots, died at See also:Pau on the 25th of May 1555.
