LINGEN , a See also:town in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Hanover, on the See also:Ems See also:canal, 43 M. N.N.W. of See also:Munster by See also:rail. Pop. 7500. It has See also:iron foundries, machinery factories, railway workshops and a considerable See also:trade in See also:cattle, and among its other See also:industries are See also:weaving and malting and the manufacture of See also:cloth. Lingen was the seat of a university from 1685 to 1819.
The See also:county of Lingen, of which this town was the See also:capital, was See also:united in the See also:middle ages with the county of Treklenburg. In 15o8, however, it was separated from this and was divided into an upper and a See also:lower county, but the two were united in 1541.
