After having been apprenticed for some years to a See also:wood-engraver, he studied under his See also:brother See also:Edward and under See also:James See also:Hamilton, in Philadelphia, and later studied in See also:London, See also:Paris and See also:Italy. In 1871 he accompanied See also:Professor F. V. See also:Hayden's exploring expedition to the Yellowstone, and in 1873 he went down the See also:Colorado with See also:Major J. W. See also:Powell's famous exploring party; and on these two trips he made sketches for two large pictures, " The See also:Grand See also:Canon of the Yellow-See also:stone " and " Chasm of the Colorado See also:River," both of which were bought by the See also:United States See also:government and are now in the Capitol at See also:Washington. He became a member of the See also:National See also:Academy of See also:Design in 1884 and of the American See also:Water Color Society. His wife, See also:Mary Nimmo Moran (1842–1899), who was born in See also:Strathaven, See also:Scotland, and emigrated to America in 1852, was also an artist, and was particularly prominent as an etcher.
