He graduated from See also:Oberlin See also:College in 185o and from the See also:Albany Medical College in 1853, where he attracted the See also:notice of See also:Professor See also:James See also:Hall, See also:state geologist of New See also:York, through whose See also:influence he was induced to join in an exploration of See also:Nebraska. In 1856 he was engaged under the See also:United States See also:government, and commenced a See also:series of investigations of the 109 Western Territories, one result of which was his See also:Geological See also:Report of the Exploration of the Yellowstone and See also:Missouri See also:Rivers in 1859–7860 (1869). During the See also:Civil See also:War he was actively employed as an See also:army surgeon. In 1867 he was appointed geologist-in-See also:charge of the United States Geological and See also:Geographical Survey of the Territories, and from his twelve years of labour there resulted a most valuable series of volumes in all branches of natural See also:history and economic See also:science; and he issued in 1877 his Geological and Geographical See also:Atlas of See also:Colorado. Upon the reorganization and See also:establishment of the United States Geological Survey in 1879 he acted for seven years as one of the geologists. He died at See also:Philadelphia on the 22nd of See also:December 1887.
