Educated in See also:Switzerland, he there became interested in See also:geology, and in 1845 he joined the See also:staff of the See also:Geological Survey of See also:Great See also:Britain. He was actively engaged in the survey of See also:North See also:Wales and bordering portions of See also:Shropshire, and a See also:series of splendid geological maps resulted from his See also:joint See also:work with A. C. See also:Ramsay and J. B. See also:Jukes. In 1852 he was appointed director of the Geological Survey of See also:Victoria, See also:Australia, where he gave See also:special See also:attention to the See also:gold-bearing rocks, until in 1869 the Colonial Legislature brought the Survey to an abrupt termination. At this date See also:Sir W. E. See also:Logan had just retired from the See also:office of director of the Geological Survey of See also:Canada, and Selwyn was appointed his successor. In this new See also:sphere of activity he continued his geological work with marked success, devoting particular attention to the Pre-See also:Cambrian rocks of See also:Quebec. He retired in 1894. Meanwhile in 1874 he had been elected F.R.S., in 1876 he was awarded the See also:Murchison See also:Medal of the Geological Society of See also:London, and he was created C.M.G. in 1886 for his distinguished work as assistant to the See also:Canadian Commissioners at the exhibitions in See also:Philadelphia (1876), See also:Paris (1878) and London (1886). He retired to See also:Vancouver in British See also:Columbia, where he died on the 19th of See also:October 1902. See memoir with portrait in Geol. Meg. (Feb. 1899).
