In 1o88 he and his See also:uncle See also:Geoffrey, See also:bishop of See also:Coutances, sided with Robert, See also:duke of See also:Normandy, against See also:William See also:Rufus, but they were pardoned at the See also:close of the See also:rebellion. In 1091 Mowbray defeated See also:Malcolm Canmore of See also:Scotland, who had invaded See also:England, and in 1093 surprised and slew this See also:king near See also:Alnwick; soon after this event he succeeded to his uncle's vast estates. In 1095 he led a rebellion which had for its See also:object the transference of the See also:crown from the sons of the Conqueror to See also:Stephen of See also:Aumale. Rufus marched against the earl in See also:person, and See also:Mow-See also:bray shut himself up in Bamborough See also:Castle, but he was captured by treachery, escaped, and was captured again.
