James Petrie, a native of See also:Aberdeen, who had settled in See also:Dublin as a portrait and See also:miniature painter. He was See also:born in Dublin in See also:January 1790, and was educated as an artist. Besides attaining considerable reputation as a painter of Irish landscape, he devoted much See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf. Icel. timi, Swed. timme, hour, Dan. time; from the root also seen in " tide," properly the time of between the flow and ebb of the sea, cf. O. Eng. getidan, to happen, " even-tide," &c.; it is not directly related to Lat. tempus)

In 1832 he became editor of the Dublin See also:Penny See also:Journal, a periodical designed to disseminate See also:information among the masses, to which he contributed numerous articles on the See also:history of the See also:fine arts in Ireland. Petrie may be regarded as the first scientific investigator of Irish See also:archaeology, his contributions to which are also in themselves of much importance. His See also:Essay on See also:Round Towers, for which in 183o he received the See also:prize of the Irish See also:Academy, still ranks as a See also:standard See also:work. Among his other ' contributions to Irish archaeology are his Essay on the Military See also:Architecture of Ireland and his History and Antiquities of See also:Tara See also:- HILL
