ROCKPORT , a township of See also:Essex See also:county, See also:Massachusetts, U.S.A., on the N.E. end of Cape See also:Ann, on the See also:Atlantic Ocean, See also:north-See also:east of See also:Gloucester, and about 35 M. north-east of See also:Boston. Pop. (1890) 4087; (1900) 4592; (1910, U.S. See also:census) 4211. Rockport is the See also:southern See also:terminus of the Gloucester See also:branch of the Boston & See also:Maine railway, and is served by an electric railway extending from Gloucester through Rockport and around the cape. Off Sandy See also:Bay, a See also:rendezvous of the Atlantic See also:squadron of the U.S. See also:navy, the Federal See also:government began in 1884 a See also:harbour of See also:refuge, with an See also:area of 1664 acres, to be protected from north and north-east winds by a See also:breakwater, 117 ft. wide at a See also:depth of 12 ft. below mean See also:low See also:water, rising 22 ft. above mean low water, and 9000 ft. See also:long. In the See also:town-See also:ship are the North See also:Village or See also:Pigeon See also:Cove and the See also:South Village or Rockport. Rockport is a summer resort, and there are many summer residences at See also:Andrews Point and at the South End and Headlands. There are large See also:granite quarries along the See also:coast, especially in Pigeon Cove, and there are two varieties of granite, called commercially " See also:grey " and " See also:green," both very hard, the former the more abundant. It has been used in See also:building the See also:great breakwater off Sandy Bay and various large See also:bridges. Granite for paving-stones is quarried. Like many of the Maine quarries those of Rockport owe much of their development to their nearness to deep water transportation. See also:Isinglass, See also:glue, tools, parts for automobile engines, and See also:copper paint are among the manufactures. Fishing was formerly of importance, but See also:quarrying has displaced it. Sandy Bay, the fifth See also:parish of Gloucester, first settled about 1697, and Pigeon Cove, See also:part of the third parish, were set off from Gloucester and were incorporated as the township of Rockport in 1840.
