The first See also:earl of Rosslyn was See also:Alexander See also:Wedderburn (see below), who was succeeded by his See also:nephew, See also:James St Clair See also:Erskine (1762-1837), a son of Wedderburn's See also:sister See also:Janet by her See also:marriage with See also:Sir See also:Henry Erskine (d. 1765), a Scottish See also:baronet and soldier. Entering the See also:army in 1776, James Erskine served in See also:Portugal, in See also:Denmark and in the See also:Netherlands, and became a See also:general in P814. From 1782 until 1805, when he became a peer, he was a member of See also:parliament; a Tory politician and an See also:associate of the See also:duke of Welling-ton, he was See also:lord privy See also:seal in 1829—30 and lord See also:president of the See also:council in 1834—35. He inherited the estates of the See also:family of St Clair and took this name in 1789, and he died on the 18th of See also:January 1837. His son, James Alexander (1802—1866), became 3rd earl, and in 1890 the latter's See also:grandson, James See also:Francis Harry (b. 1869), became 5th earl.
