N.N.E. from See also:London by the See also:Great Eastern railway. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1901), 3371. The town lies high, in an open, healthy district. The See also:church of St See also:Peter and St See also:Paul is Perpendicular, a See also:hand-some cruciform structure with central See also:tower, and has a See also:fine carved roof of See also:wood. The town, which has a town-See also:hall and See also:assembly rooms, possesses See also:iron foundries and a considerable agricultural See also:trade, with See also:cattle fairs. At See also:Castle See also:Acre, 4 M. N., are the picturesque ruins of a Cluniac priory, founded shortly after the See also:Conquest by See also:William de See also:Warren. These comprise portions of the church, including the fine See also:west front, arcaded, with three See also:Norman doors and a Perpendicular window, with the See also:chapter-See also:house, cloisters and conventual buildings. The See also:majority of the remains are Norman or Perpendicular. The castle of the same founder has See also:left little but its See also:foundations, but it was erected within the See also:protection of a remarkable See also:series of earthworks, which remain in See also:good See also:condition. These are apparently in See also:part See also:Roman, in part earlier.

The site, on which Roman coins, pottery and other remains have been discovered, was on an See also:

ancient trackway See also:running See also:north and south. It may be noted that de Warren founded a similar castle and priory at See also:Lewes in See also:Sussex. The church of St See also:James, Castle Acre, contains good See also:Early See also:English and Perpendicular See also:work.
