He was See also:born on the 11th of See also:February 1800, and was educated at See also:Harrow and at Trinity See also:College, See also:Cambridge, where he gained the See also:Porson See also:prize in 182o, and graduated as twelfth wrangler in 1821. From 1822 to 1872 he frequently communicated papers to the Royal Society, many of them on mathematical subjects. At an See also:early See also:period he had begun his See also:optical researches, which were to have such important results in connexion with photography. To the See also:Edinburgh See also:Journal of See also:Science in 1826 he contributed a See also:paper on " Some Experiments on Coloured See also:Flame "; to the Quarterly Journal of Science in 1827 a paper on " Mono-See also:chromatic See also:Light "; and to the Philosophical See also:Magazine a number of papers on chemical subjects, including one on " Chemical Changes of See also:Colour." Before L. J. M. See also:Daguerre exhibited in 1839 pictures taken by the See also:sun, Talbot had obtained similar success, and as soon as Daguerre's discoveries became known communicated the results of his experiments to the Royal Society. In 1841 he made known his See also:discovery of the calotype or talbotype See also:process, and after the discovery of the See also:collodion process by See also:Frederick See also:Scott See also:Archer in 1851 he devised a method of instantaneous photography. For his discoveries, which are detailed in his See also:Pencil of Nature (1844), he received in 1842 the See also:Rumford See also:medal of the Royal Society.
