(1901), 3012. An See also:abbey was founded here towards the end of the 5th See also:century, and in the beginning of the 6th an episcopal see by St Jarlath. The See also:Protestant archbishopric of Tuam was lowered to a bishopric on the See also:death of See also:Archbishop See also:Power Le Poer See also:Trench in 1839, and See also:united with that of See also:Killala and Achonry. It is, however, a See also:Roman See also:Catholic archbishopric. The Protestant See also:cathedral is also the See also:parish See also:church, and was to a great extent re-built c. 1861 from plans by See also:Sir See also:Thomas See also:Deane. Only the See also:chancel of the old church remains, but its red See also:sandstone See also:arch is a remark-ably See also:fine example of See also:Norman See also:work; it See also:dates from the See also:middle of the 12th century. The See also:modern Roman Catholic cathedral is Perpendicular in See also:style and cruciform in See also:plan. The interior is elaborately decorated.

St Jarlath's Roman Catholic See also:college, usually called the New College, is a See also:seminary founded in 1814 for the See also:education of priests. To the See also:west are the archbishop's See also:palace and a See also:convent of Presentation nuns. The town has a considerable See also:retail See also:trade, and is a centre for the disposal of agricultural produce. Tuam received its first See also:charter from See also:James I. Before the See also:union in 1800 it returned two members to the Irish See also:Parliament.
