BARNET , a residential See also:

district in the See also:mid or St Albans See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Hertfordshire, See also:England; 10 m. N. of See also:London, served by the See also:main See also:line and branches of the See also:Great See also:Northern railway. The three See also:chief divisions are as follows: (1) CIUPPING Or HIGH BARNET, a See also:market See also:town and See also:urban district (Barnet), pop. (1901) 7876. The second epithet designates its position on a See also:hill, but the first is given it from the market granted to the abbots of St Albans to be kept there, by See also:Henry II. Near the town, See also:round a point marked by an See also:obelisk, was fought in 1471 the decisive See also:battle between the houses of See also:York and See also:Lancaster, in which the See also:earl of See also:Warwick See also:fell and the Lancastrians were totally defeated. The town is on the Great See also:North Road, on which it was formerly an important coaching station. A large See also:annual See also:horse and See also:cattle See also:fair is held.
