His See also:good See also:voice led to his being given a musical See also:education, and he soon began See also:writing songs and lighter pieces for the stage. In 1834 he published a collection of Lyrical Illustrations of the See also:Modern Poets, His See also:Mountain Sylph—with which his name is chiefly connected—received a warm welcome when produced at the Lyceum on See also:August 25, 1834, as the first modern English See also:opera: and it was followed by another opera See also:Fair Rosamund in 1837, and by See also:Farinelli in 1839. He had a large connexion as a singing-See also:master at See also:Cheltenham, and published Systems and Singing-masters (1842) and School for the Voice (1844). He died on the 16th of See also:April 189o. His See also:nephew, JOHN See also:FRANCIS BARNETT (1837— ), son of John's See also:brother, See also:Joseph See also:Alfred, also a See also:professor of See also:music, carried on the traditions of the See also:family as a composer and teacher. He obtained a See also:queen's scholarship at the Royal See also:Academy of Music, and See also:developed into an accomplished pianist, visiting See also:Germany to study in 1857 and playing at a Gewandhaus See also:concert at See also:Leipzig in 186o. He came into See also:notice as a composer with his symphonyin A See also:minor (1864), and followed this with a number of compositions for See also:orchestra, strings or See also:pianoforte. His See also:cantata The See also:Ancient Mariner was brought out at See also:Birmingham in 1867, and another, See also:Paradise and the See also:Peri, in 187o, both with See also:great success. In 1873 his most important See also:work, the See also:oratorio The Raising of See also:Lazarus, was written, and in 1876 produced at See also:Hereford. Many other cantatas, pianoforte pieces, &c. were composed by him, and successfully brought out; and he took an active See also:part as a professor in the work of the See also:Guildhall School of Music and Royal See also:College of Music.
