COLNE , a See also:

N. by E. from See also:Manchester by the Lancashire & See also:Yorkshire railway; it is served also by a See also:branch of the Midland railway from See also:Skipton. Pop. (1901) 23,000. It stands on a hilly site above a small affluent of the See also:river See also:Calder. The See also:church of St See also:Bartholomew retains some See also:Norman See also:work, but is chiefly of various later periods. There is a See also:cloth See also:hall or piece hall, originally used as an See also:exchange when woollens were the See also:staple of the town. The See also:grammar school isof See also:interest as the See also:place where See also:John See also:Tillotson (163o-1694), See also:archbishop of See also:Canterbury, received See also:early See also:education. Colne is a place of See also:great antiquity, and many See also:Roman coins have been found on the site. As early as the ,4th See also:century it was the seat of a woollen manufacture; but its See also:principal manufactures now are cottons, printed calicoes and See also:muslin. In the See also:neighbour-See also:hood are several See also:limestone and See also:slate quarries. The town was incorporated in 1895, and the See also:corporation consists of a See also:mayor, 6 aldermen and 18 councillors.
