EDENBRIDGE , a See also:

market See also:town in the See also:south-western See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Kent, See also:England, 26 m. S.S.E. of See also:London, on the South-Eastern & See also:Chatham, and the London, See also:Brighton & South See also:Coast See also:railways. Pop. (1901) 2546. It is pleasantly situated on the See also:river See also:Eden, an affluent of the See also:Medway, in a valley between the Ragstone Hills and the See also:Forest Ridges. The See also:church of St See also:Peter and St See also:Paul is principally Perpendicular. The town, which has considerable agricultural See also:trade, possesses a chalybeate See also:spring, but this is little used. Two See also:miles from the town is Hever See also:Castle, a beautiful moated See also:mansion dating from the 15th and x6th centuries, but occupying the site of an earlier structure. This was rebuilt by See also:Sir See also:Geoffrey See also:Boleyn, whose See also:grandson, Sir See also:Thomas, was See also:father of See also:Anne, second wife of See also:Henry VIII., who here'spent much of her See also:life before her See also:marriage; and was visited several times by the See also:king. There is a See also:chapel of her See also:family in the See also:fine See also:parish church of Hever. Not far distant is the See also:modern Chiddingstone Castle, on an See also:ancient site. A See also:block of See also:sandstone in the See also:park is called the " chiding See also:stone," tradition asserting it to be a prehistoric seat of See also:judgment.
