FOCHABERS , a See also:

burgh of See also:barony and See also:village of See also:Elginshire, See also:Scotland. Pop. (Igor) 981. It is delightfully situated on the See also:Spey, about 9 M. E. by S. of See also:Elgin, the See also:terminus of a See also:branch of the Highland railway connecting at Orbliston Junction with the See also:main See also:line from Elgin to See also:Keith. The See also:town was rebuilt in its See also:present situation at the end of the 18th See also:century, when its earlier site was required for alterations in the grounds of See also:Gordon See also:Castle, in which the old town See also:cross still stands. The streets all See also:lead at right angles to the central square, where fairs and markets are held. The public buildings include a library and See also:reading-See also:room, the See also:court-See also:house and the Milne school, named after See also:Alexander Milne, who endowed it with a See also:legacy of £20,000. Adjoining the town, surrounded by a See also:park containing many magnificent old trees, stands Gordon Castle, the See also:chief seat of the See also:duke of See also:Richmond and Gordon, erected in the 18th century. The See also:antiquary See also:George See also:Chalmers (1742–1825) and the composer See also:William See also:Marshall (1748–1833) were natives of the burgh.
