See also:bank of the See also:Hudson See also:river, opposite the See also:northern part of New See also:York See also:City. Pop. (1905) 3433; (1910) 4472. It is connected with the neighbouring towns and cities by electric See also:railways, and by See also:ferry with New York City, of which it is a residential suburb. The See also:main part of the borough lies along the See also:summit of the Palisades; See also:north of Fort Lee is an Interstate Palisades See also:Park. See also:Early in the See also:War of See also:Independence the Americans erected here a fortification, first called Fort Constitution but later renamed Fort Lee, in See also:honour of See also:General See also:Charles Lee. The name of the fort was subsequently applied to the See also:village that See also:grew up in its vicinity. From the 15th of See also:September until the loth of See also:November 1776 Fort Lee was held by Gen. See also:Nathanael See also:Greene with a See also:garrison of 3500 men, but the See also:capture by the See also:British of Fort See also:Washington on the opposite bank of the river and the See also:crossing of the Hudson by See also:Lord See also:Cornwallis with 5000 men made it necessary for Greene to abandon this See also:post and join Washington in the famous " See also:retreat across the Jerseys." An See also:attempt to recapture Fort Lee was made by General See also:Anthony See also:Wayne in 178o, but was unsuccessful. On the site of the fort a See also:monument, designed by Carl E. Tefft and consisting of heroic figures of a See also:Continental trooper and drummer boy, was erected in 1908. The borough of Fort Lee was incorporated in 1904.
