He was ordained See also:priest in 1849 and for a See also:short See also:time taught See also:history at the See also:seminary of See also:Strassburg, where he had previously received his clerical training. In 1854 he was appointed See also:professor of See also:theology at the See also:Sorbonne, and became known as a successful preacher. He went to See also:Rome in 1869, at the instance of See also:Pius IX., to assist in the steps preparatory to the promulgation of the See also:dogma of papal See also:infallibility. He was consecrated bishop of See also:Angers in 1870. During the Franco-See also:German See also:war Freppel organized a See also:body of priests to See also:minister to the French prisoners in See also:Germany, and penned an eloquent protest to the See also:emperor See also:William I. against the See also:annexation of Alsace-See also:Lorraine. In 188o he was elected See also:deputy for See also:Brest and continued to represent it until his See also:death. Being the only priest in the Chamber of Deputies since the death of See also:Dupanloup, he became the See also:chief See also:parliamentary See also:champion of the See also:Church, and, though no orator, was a frequent See also:speaker. On all ecclesiastical affairs Freppel voted with the Royalist and See also:Catholic party, yet on questions in which French colonial See also:prestige was involved, such as the expedition to See also:Tunis, Tong-See also:King, See also:Madagascar (1881, 1883-85), he supported the See also:government of the See also:day. He always remained a staunch Royalist and went so far as to oppose See also:Leo XIII.'s policy of conciliating the See also:Republic. He died at Angers on the 12th of See also:December 1891. Freppel's See also:historical and theological See also:works forin 30 vols., the best known of which are: See also:Les Peres apostoliques et leur epoque (1859); Les Apologistes chretiens au Ile siecle (2 vols., 186o); See also:Saint See also:Irene et l'eloquence chretienne clans la Gaule aux deux premiers siecles (1861); Tertullien (2 vols., 1863); Saint Cyprien et l'Eglise d'Afrique (1864); See also:Clement d'Alexandrie (1865); Origene (2 vols., 1867).
