GARCIA DE PAREDES, DIEGO (1466–1534) , See also:Spanish soldier and duellist, was a native of See also:Trujillo in See also:Estremadura, See also:Spain. He never commanded an See also:army or See also:rose to the position of a See also:general, but he was a notable figure in the See also:wars of the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th See also:century, when See also:personal prowess had still a considerable See also:share in deciding the result of actions. His native See also:town and its See also:district, which See also:lie between Talavera and See also:Madrid, produced many of the most noted conquistadores of See also:America, including the See also:Pizarro See also:family. Diego himself served in his youth in the See also:war of See also:Granada. His strength, daring and activity fitted him to shine in operations largely composed of See also:night See also:marches, escalades, surprises and See also:hand-to-hand combats. The See also:main See also:scene of his achievements was in See also:Italy, and he betook himself to it—on his own showing—not in See also:search of See also:glory, but because he had killed a relation of his own, Ruy See also:Sanchez de Vargas, in a See also:street fight arising out of a See also:quarrel about a See also:horse. He fled to See also:Rome, then under the See also:rule of the Borgias. Diego was a distant relation to the See also:cardinal of See also:Santa Cruz (See also:Carvajal), a favourite with See also:Pope See also:Alexander VI., who was in conflict with the barons of the Romagna and took Diego into his service. He remained a soldier of the pope till he killed a See also:man in a personal quarrel and found it necessary to pass over to the enemy. Now he became acquainted with the Colonnas, who appreciated his services. The wars between See also:Ferdinand V. of See also:Aragon (the See also:Catholic See also:king) and See also:Louis XII. gave him a more creditable opening.
