GEFLE , a seaport of See also:Sweden on an inlet of the Gulf of See also:Bothnia, See also:chief See also:town of the See also:district (lan) of Gefleborg, 112 M. N.N.W. of See also:Stockholm by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 29,522. It is the chief See also:port of the district of Kopparberg, with its See also:iron and other mines and forests. The exports consist principally of See also:timber and See also:wood-pulp, iron and See also:steel. The See also:harbour, which has two entrances about 20 ft. deep, is usually See also:ice-See also:bound in See also:mid-See also:winter. Large vessels generally load in the roads at Gr..See also:berg, 6 m. distant. There are slips and See also:shipbuilding yards, and a manufacture of See also:sail-See also:cloth. The town is an important See also:industrial centre, having See also:tobacco and See also:leather factories, See also:electrical and other See also:mechanical See also:works, and breweries. At Skutskar at the mouth of the Dal See also:river are wood-pulp and saw See also:mills, dealing with the large quantities of timber floated down the river; and there are large wood-yards in the suburb of Bomhus. Gefle was almost destroyed by See also:fire in 1869, but was rebuilt in See also:good See also:style, and has the ad-vantage of a beautiful situation.
