JAMIESON, See also:JOHN (1759-1838) , Scottish lexicographer, son of a See also:minister, was See also:born in See also:Glasgow, on the 3rd of See also:March 1759. He was educated at Glasgow University, and subsequently attended classes in See also:Edinburgh. After six years' theological study, Jamieson was licensed to preach in 1789 and became pastor of an See also:Anti-burgher See also:congregation in See also:Forfar; and in 1797 he was called to the Anti-burgher See also:church in See also:Nicolson See also:Street, Edinburgh. The See also:union of the Burgher and Anti-burgher sections of the See also:Secession Church in 1820 was largely due to his exertions. He retired from the See also:ministry in 183o and died in Edinburgh on the 12th of See also:July 1838. Jamieson's name stands at the See also:head of a tolerably See also:long See also:list of See also:works in the Bibliotheca britannica; but by far his most important See also:book is the laborious and erudite compilation, best described by its own See also:title-See also:page: An Etymological See also:Dictionary of the Scottish See also:Language; illustrating the words in their different significations by examples from See also:Ancient and See also:Modern Writers; See also:shewing their See also:Affinity to those of other See also:Languages, and especially the See also:Northern; explaining many terms which though now obsolete in See also:England were formerly See also:common to both countries; and elucidating See also:National See also:Rites, Customs and Institutions in their See also:Analogy to those of other nations; to which is prefixed a Dissertation on the Origin of the Scottish Language. This appeared in 2 vols., 4t0, at Edinburgh in 18o8, followed in 1825 by a Supplement, in 2 vols., 4t0, in which he was assisted by scholars in all parts of the See also:country. A revised edition by Longmuir and See also:Donaldson was issued in 1879–1887.
