As ban, Jellachich's policy was directed to preserving the Slav kingdoms for the See also:Habsburg See also:monarchy by identifying himself with the nationalist opposition to Magyar ascendancy, while at the same See also:time discouraging the extreme " Illyrism "advocated by Lodovik Gaj (1809–1872). Though his separatist See also:measures at first brought him into disfavour at the imperial See also:court, their true See also:objective was soon recognized, and, with the See also:triumph of the more violent elements of the Hungarian revolution, he was hailed as the most conspicuous See also:champion of the unity of the See also:empire, and was able to bring about that See also:union of the imperial army with the See also:southern Slays by which the revolution in See also:Vienna and See also:Budapest was overthrown (see See also:AUSTRIA-See also:HUNGARY: See also:History). He began the See also:war of See also:independence in See also:September 1848 by See also:crossing the See also:Drave at the See also:head of 40,000 Croats. After the bloody See also:battle of Buda he concluded a three days' truce with the Hungarians to enable him to assist See also:Prince See also:Windischgratz to reduce Vienna, and subsequently fought against the See also:Magyars at See also:Schwechat. During the See also:winter See also:campaign of 1848–49 he commanded, under Windischgratz, the Austrian right wing, capturing Magyar-See also:Ovar and Raab, and defeating the Magyars at M6r.
