Though usually designated as a single See also:municipality, Las Vegas consists of two distinct corporations, the old See also:town on the W. See also:bank of the river and the city proper on the E. bank. Pop. of the city (189o) 2385; (1900) 3552 (340 being See also:foreign-See also:born and 116 negroes); (1910) 3755. According to See also:local estimates, the combined See also:population of the city and the old town in 1908 was xo,000. Las Vegas is served by the See also:Atchison, See also:Topeka & Santa Fe railway, and is its See also:division headquarters in New Mexico. The city lies in a valley at the See also:foot of the See also:main range of the Rocky Mountains, and is about 6400 ft. above the See also:sea. There are high peaks to the W. and within a See also:short distance of the city much beautiful See also:mountain scenery, especially along the " Scenic Route," a See also:highway from Las Vegas to Santa Fe, traversing the Las Vegas See also:canyon and the Pecos Valley See also:forest reserve. The See also:country E. of the city consists of level plains. The small amount of rainfall, the See also:great See also:elevation and the See also:southern See also:latitude give the region a dry and rarified See also:air, and Las Vegas is a noted See also:health resort. Six See also:miles distant, and connected with the city by rail, are the Las Vegas Hot Springs. The old town on the W. bank of the Gallinas river retains many features of a Mexican See also:village, with See also:low See also:adobe houses facing narrow and crooked streets. Its inhabitants are largely of See also:Spanish-See also:American descent.

The' part on the E. bank or city proper is thoroughly See also:

modern, with well-graded streets, many of them bordered with trees. The most important public institutions are the New Mexico insane See also:asylum, the New Mexico normal university (chartered 1893, opened 1898), the county See also:court See also:house (in the old town), the See also:academy of the Immaculate Conception, conducted by the Sisters of Loretto, See also:Saint See also:Anthony's See also:sanatorium, maintained by the Sisters of Charity, La Salle See also:institute, conducted by the See also:Christian See also:Brothers, a Presbyterian See also:mission school and a Methodist See also:manual training and commercial school. There are railway See also:machine-shops, and various manufactories. Las Vegas lies in the centre of an extensive grazing region, has large stockyards and annually See also:ships great quantities of See also:wool. Three of the local See also:newspapers are published in Spanish. Las Vegas was founded in 1835, under the See also:government of the Mexican See also:Republic. On the 15th of See also:August 1846, during the See also:war between Mexico and the See also:United States, Gen. See also:Stephen W. See also:Kearny entered the town, and its See also:alcalde took the See also:oath of See also:allegiance to the United States. There was but little progress or development until the arrival of the railway in 1879. In 1888 the part See also:east of the river was incorporated as a town under the name of East Las Vegas, and in 1896 it was chartered as the city of Las Vegas. The old Las Vegas, See also:west of the river, was incorporated as a town in 1903.
