Oxford. He was ordained in 1818, and was appointed See also:vicar of See also:Cowley, Oxford, in 1823. In 1827 he received the rectory of See also:West Tytherley, See also:Hampshire, and two years later he was elected headmaster of See also:Harrow. This See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
office he held until 1836, when he was consecrated See also:bishop of the new see of See also:Ripon. In 1856 he was translated to the see of See also:Durham, and in 186o he became archbishop of See also:York. In 1862 he succeeded See also:John See also:Bird See also:Sumner as archbishop of Canterbury. Soon afterwards the questions connected with the deposition of Bishop See also:Colenso were referred to him, but, while regarding Colenso's opinions as heretical and his deposition as justifiable, he refused to pronounce upon the legal difficulties of the See also:case. The See also:chief event of his primacy was the See also:- MEETING (from " to meet," to come together, assemble, 0. Eng. metals ; cf. Du. moeten, Swed. mota, Goth. gamotjan, &c., derivatives of the Teut. word for a meeting, seen in O. Eng. Wit, moot, an assembly of the people; cf. witanagemot)

His published See also:works include numerous sermons and addresses. He died on the 27th of See also:October 1868 at Addington See also:Park, near See also:Croydon.
