He was of See also:barbarian parentage and was brought up as a shepherd. His immense stature and enormous feats of strength attracted the See also:attention of the emperor Septimius See also:Severus. He carefully absented himself from See also:court during the reign of See also:Heliogabalus, but under his successor See also:Alexander Severus, was appointed supreme See also:commander of the Roman armies. After the See also:murder of Alexander in See also:Gaul, hastened, it is said, by his instigation, Maximinus was See also:pro-claimed emperor by the soldiers on the 19th of See also:March 235. The three years of his reign, which were spent wholly in the See also:camp. were marked by See also:great See also:cruelty and oppression; the wide-spread discontent thus produced culminated in a revolt in See also:Africa and the See also:assumption of the See also:purple by See also:Gordian (q.v.). Maximinus, who was in See also:Pannonia at the See also:time, marched against See also:Rome, and passing over the See also:Julian See also:Alps descended on See also:Aquileia; while detained before that See also:city he and his son were murdered in their See also:tent by a See also:body of See also:praetorians.
