MORTIER, EDOUARD ADOLPHE CASIMIR See also:JOSEPH, See also:DUKE OF TREVISO (1768-1835) , See also:marshal of See also:France, was See also:born at Cateau Cambresis on the 13th of See also:February 1768, and entered the See also:army as a sub-See also:lieutenant in 1791. He served in the See also:campaigns of 1792 and 1793 on the See also:north-eastern frontier and in the Nether-lands, and subsequently on the See also:Meuse and the See also:Rhine. In the See also:war against the second See also:coalition in 1799 he was promoted successively See also:general of See also:brigade and general of See also:division. His conduct of the See also:French occupation of See also:Hanover led See also:Napoleon to include Mortier in the first See also:list of marshals created in 1804. He commanded a See also:corps of the grande armee in the See also:Ulm See also:campaign in which he distinguished himself particularly by his brilliant See also:action of Diirrenstein; in 18o6 he was again in Hanover andnorth-western See also:Germany, and in 1807 he served with the grande armee in the See also:Friedland campaign. In 18o8 he was .created duke of Treviso, and shortly afterwards he commanded an army corps in Napoleon's campaign for the recapture of See also:Madrid. He remained in See also:Spain for two campaigns, winning the victory of Ocana in See also:November 18og. In 1812 and 1813 he commanded the See also:Young Guard, and in the " defensive campaign of 1814 he rendered brilliant services in command of rearguards and covering detachments. In 1815, after the See also:flight of See also:Louis XVIII., he rejoined Napoleon and was given a high command, but at the opening of the See also:Waterloo campaign he See also:fell See also:ill. After the second restoration he was for a See also:time in disgrace, but in 1818 he was readmitted to the Chamber of Peers and in 1825 received the See also:Order of the See also:Saint Esprit. In 183o-1831 he was See also:ambassador of France at St See also:Petersburg, and in 1834-1835 See also:minister of war and See also:president' of the See also:council of ministers. In 1835, while accompanying Louis Philippe to a See also:review, the marshal with eleven other persons was killed by the See also:bomb aimed at the See also:king by See also:Fieschi (See also:July 28, 1835).
