town and See also:police See also:burgh of See also:Ayrshire, See also:Scotland. Pop. (19o1) 4467. It is situated 71 M. E. of See also:Kilmarnock by the See also:Glasgow and See also:South-Western railway. It was made a burgh of See also:barony in 1490 by See also:James IV., the See also:charter being confirmed in 1566 by See also:Sir See also:Matthew See also:Campbell, the See also:laird of See also:Loudoun, in which See also:parish the town is situated. See also:Muslin- and See also:lace-See also:curtain making and the manufacture of See also:mosquito-nets are the See also:chief See also:industries. Nearly 2 m. E. lies Darvel (pep. 3070), a police burgh and manufacturing town, with a station on the Glasgow and South-Western railway; its chief manufactures are those of lace curtains, muslins and carpets. Two See also:miles E. rises Loudoun See also:Hill (1036 ft.) where See also:Robert See also:Bruce defeated the See also:English in 1307, and about a mile farther E. is the See also:cairn raised to commemorate one of See also:Wallace's victories.
