ROBERT NUGENT, See also:EARL (1702-1788), Irish politician and poet, son of See also:Michael Nugent, was See also:born at Carlanstown, Co. See also:Westmeath. He was tersely described by See also:Richard See also:Glover as " a jovial and voluptuous Irishman who had See also:left popery for the See also:Protestant See also:religion, See also:money and widows." His See also:change of religion took See also:place at a very See also:early See also:period in See also:life; he married in 1736 See also:Anna (d. 1756), daughter of See also:James See also:Craggs, the secretary of See also:state, a See also:lady who had already been twice given in See also:marriage. His wife's See also:property comprised the See also:borough of St Mawes in See also:Cornwall, and Nugent sat for that See also:constituency from 1741 to 1754, after which date he represented See also:Bristol until 1774, when he returned to St Mawes. He was a See also:lord of the See also:treasury from 1754 to 1759 and See also:president of the See also:board of See also:trade from 1766 to 1768. He married in 1757 See also:Elizabeth, See also:dowager-countess of See also:Berkeley, who brought him a large See also:fortune. His support of the See also:ministry was so useful that he was created in 1767 See also:Viscount See also:Clare, and in 1776 Earl Nugent, both Irish peerages. He died on the 13th of See also:October 1788. Lord Nugent was the author of some poetical productions, several of which are preserved in the second See also:volume of See also:Dodsley's Collections (1748). The earldom descended by See also:special See also:remainder to the earl's son-in-See also:law, See also:George Nugent See also:Temple See also:Grenville, See also:marquess of See also:Buckingham, and so to his successors, the See also:dukes of Buckingham and See also:Chandos.
