His See also:frigate led the way through the Channel at See also:Copenhagen, and in the See also:battle he was attached as See also:commodore of a See also:light See also:squadron to See also:Nelson's See also:division. Through the grounding of three See also:ships of the See also:line, Riou and his frigates found themselves opposed to the full force of the See also:great Trekroner See also:battery. Early in the fight he was wounded, but refused to leave the See also:deck, and, as he was sitting on a See also:gun-See also:carriage and directing his men's See also:fire, he was cut in two by a See also:cannon See also:ball. Nelson, who had not known him before this expedition, had conceived a great See also:affection for Riou, and spoke of his loss as " irreparable." See also:Brenton, the naval historian, declared that he had all the qualities of a perfect officer. See also:Parliament commemorated the memory of the " gallant good Riou " by a memorial in St See also:Paul's See also:Cathedral.
