James Spratt, R.N., and entered the See also:navy in 1827. He was attached to the See also:surveying See also:branch, and was engaged almost continuously until 1863 in surveying the Mediterranean. As commander of the " Spitfire" he rendered distinguished service in the See also:Black See also:Sea during the See also:Crimean See also:War, and was appointed C.B. in 1855. At an earlier date he was associated with See also:Edward See also:Forbes, then naturalist to the " See also:Beacon," and during the years 1841-1843 they made observations on the bathymetrical See also:distribution of marine See also:life. To Forbes he was specially indebted for his See also:interest in natural See also:history and See also:geology,
and together they published Travels in See also:Lycia, &c. (1847). Spratt blending of See also:wood and See also:water makes the See also:Spreewald in summer a investigated the caves at See also:Malta and obtained remains of the
pigmy See also:elephant (Elephas melitensis), which was described by Dr H. See also:Falconer. He investigated the geology of several See also:Greek islands, also the shores of See also:Asia See also:Minor, and made detailed observations on the See also:Delta of the See also:Nile. He was especially distinguished for his Travels and Researches in See also:Crete (2 vols., 1865), in which he ably described the See also:physical See also:geography, geology, See also:archaeology and natural history of the See also:island. He was commissioner_ of See also:fisheries from 1866 to 1873; and acting See also:conservator of the See also:Mersey from 1879 until the See also:close of his life. He died at Tunbridge See also:Wells on the loth of See also:March 1888.
