N.W. of See also:London by the London & See also:North-Western railway. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1891) 17,063; (1901) 29,327. It lies on the small See also:river See also:Colne in a pleasant undulating and well wooded district. The See also:church of St See also:Mary, with embattled See also:tower and See also:spire, is of various See also:dates, and contains See also:good examples of monumental See also:work of the See also:early 17th See also:century; and in the See also:churchyard is buried See also:Robert Clutterbuck (d. 1831), author of the•See also:History and Antiquities of the See also:County of See also:Hertford. There are several See also:modern churches and chapels. The See also:chief See also:building within the town is the Watford Public Library and School of See also:Art. There are large breweries, also See also:corn-See also:mills, See also:malt-kilns and an See also:iron foundry. Bushey, on the See also:south See also:side of the Colne, lying for the most See also:part high above it, is a suburb, chiefly residential, with a station on the North-Western See also:line. The church of St See also:James, extensively restored by See also:Sir See also:Gilbert See also:Scott, is Early See also:English in its See also:oldest part, the See also:chancel. Here a school of art was founded by Sir See also:Hubert von Herkomer, R.A., but it was closed in 1904, and subsequently revived in other hands.
