(c. 950-c. 992), See also:duke of See also:Lower See also:Lorraine, was a younger son of the Frankish See also:king See also:Louis IV., and consequently a member of the Carolingian See also:family. Unable to obtain the duchy of See also:Burgundy owing to the opposition of his See also:brother, King See also:Lothair, he went to the See also:court of his maternal See also:uncle, the See also:emperor See also:Otto the See also:Great, about 965, and in 977 received from the emperor Otto II. the duchy of Lower Lorraine. His authority in Lorraine was nominal; but he aided Otto in his struggle with Lothair, and on the See also:death of his See also:nephew, Louis V., made an effort to secure the Frankish See also:crown. See also:Hugh See also:Capet, however, was the successful See also:candidate and See also:war See also:broke out. Charles had gained some successes and had captured See also:Reims, when in 991 he was treacherously seized by See also:Adalberon, See also:bishop of See also:Laon, and handed over to Hugh. Imprisoned with his wife and See also:children at See also:Orleans, Charles did not See also:long survive his humiliation. His eldest son Otto, duke of Lower Lorraine, died in 1005.
