town of See also:east-central See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Saone-et-See also:Loire, situated at the confluence of the Semence and the Arconce, 39 M. W.N.W. of See also:Macon on the See also:Paris-See also:Lyon railway. Pop. (woe) 3228. It has a sub-prefecture, tribunals of See also:primary instance and See also:commerce, and a communal See also:college. There are See also:stone quarries in the vicinity; the town manufactures pottery, and is the centre for See also:trade in the famous breed of Charolais See also:cattle and in agricultural products. The ruins of the See also:castle of the See also:counts of Charolais occupy the See also:summit of a See also:hill in the immediate vicinity of the town. Charolles was the capital of Charolais, an old See also:division of France, which from the See also:early 14th See also:century gave the See also:title of See also:count to its possessors. In 1327 the countship passed by See also:marriage to the See also:house of See also:Armagnac, and in 1390 it was sold to See also:Philip of See also:Burgundy. After the See also:death of See also:Charles the Bold, who in his youth had See also:borne the title of count of Charolais, it was seized by See also:Louis XI. of France, but in 1493 it was ceded by Charles VIII. to See also:Maximilian of See also:Austria, the representative of the Burgundian See also:family. Ultimately passing to the See also:Spanish See also:kings, it became for a considerable See also:period an See also:object of dispute between France and See also:Spain, until at length in 1684 it was assigned to the See also:great See also:Conde, a creditor of the See also:king of Spain. It was See also:united to the See also:French See also:crown in 1771.
