CHIMAY , a See also:

town in the extreme See also:south-See also:east of the See also:province of See also:Hainaut, See also:Belgium, dating from the 7th See also:century. Pop. (1904) 3383. It is more commonly spoken of as being in the See also:district entre Sambre et See also:Meuse. Owing to its proximity to the See also:French frontier it has undergone many sieges, the last of which was in 164o, when See also:Turenne gave orders that it should be reduced to such ruin that it could never stand another. The town is chiefly famous for the See also:castle and See also:park that See also:bear its name. Originally a stronghold of the Croy See also:family, it has passed through the D'Arenbergs to its See also:present owners, the princes of Caraman-Chimay. The castle, which before Turenne's See also:order to demolish it possessed seven towers, has now only one in ruins, and a See also:modern See also:chateau was built in the Tudor See also:style in the 18th century. This domain carried with it the right to one of the twelve peerages of Hainaut. Madame See also:Tallien, daughter of Dr See also:Cabarrus, the See also:Lady of See also:Thermidor, married as her second See also:husband the See also:prince de Chimay, and held her little See also:court here down to her See also:death in 1835. There is amemorial to her in the See also:church, which also contains a See also:fine See also:monument of Phillippe de Croy, See also:chamberlain and comrade in arms of the See also:emperor See also:Charles V. See also:John See also:Froissart the chronicler died and was buried here.

honour on the See also:Grand See also:Place. Chimay is situated on a stream called the See also:White See also:Water, which in its See also:lower course becomes the Viroin and joins the Meuse.
