He was the only son of See also:William Hislop Clarke, a See also:barrister of the See also:Middle See also:Temple who died in 1863. He emigrated hwith to See also:Australia, where his See also:uncle, See also:James See also:Langton Clarke, was a See also:county See also:court See also:judge. He was at first a clerk in the See also:bank of See also:Australasia, but showed no business ability, and soon proceeded to learn farming at a station on the Wimmera See also:river, See also:Victoria. He was already See also:writing stories for the Australian See also:Magazine, when in 1867 he joined the See also:staff of the See also:Melbourne See also:Argus through the introduction of Dr See also:Robert Lewins. He also became secretary (1872) to the trustees of the Melbourne public library and later (1876) assistant librarian. He founded in 1868 the Yorick See also:Club, which soon numbered among its members the See also:chief Australian men of letters. The most famous of his books is For the See also:Term of his Natural See also:Life (Melbourne, 1874), a powerful See also:tale of an Australian penal See also:settlement, which originally appeared in serial See also:form in a Melbourne See also:paper. He also wrote The Peripatetic Philosopher (1869), a See also:series of amusing papers reprinted from The Austral-asian; See also:Long Odds (London, 1870), a novel; and numerous comedies and pantomimes, the best of which was Twinkle, Twinkle, Little See also:Star (See also:Theatre Royal, Melbourne; See also:Christmas, 1873). He married an actress, Marian Dunn. In spite of his popular success Clarke was constantly involved in pecuniary difficulties, which are said to have hastened his See also:death at Melbourne on the 2nd of See also:August 1881.
