On the See also:accession of .Ethelwulf, rEthelstan, his son or See also:brother, was made sub-king of Kent, See also:Surrey, See also:Sussex and See also:Essex. lEthelwulf's reign was chiefly occupied with struggles against the Danes. After the king's defeat 843-844, the See also:Somerset and See also:Dorset levies won a victory at the mouth of the Parret, c. 85o. In 851 Ceorl, with the men of See also:Devon, defeated the Danes at Wigganburg, and lEthelstan of Kent was victorious at See also:Sandwich, in spite of which they wintered in See also:England that See also:year for the first See also:time. In 851 also 1Ethelwulf and lEthelbald won their See also:great victory at Aclea, probably the See also:modern See also:Ockley. In 853 AEthelwulf subdued the See also:North Welsh, in See also:answer to the See also:appeal of See also:Burgred of See also:Mercia, and gave him his daughter lEthelswith in See also:marriage. 855 is the year of the Donation of 1Ethelwulf and of his See also:journey to See also:Rome with See also:Alfred. On his way See also:home he married See also:Judith, daughter of See also:Charles the Bald. According to See also:Asser he was compelled to. give up Wessex to his son lEthelbald on his return, and content himself with the eastern sub-See also:kingdom.
