FONNI , a See also:

town of See also:Sardinia, in the See also:province of See also:Sassari, 328o ft. above See also:sea-level, to the N.W. of See also:Monte Gennargentu, 21 M. S. of See also:Nuoro by road. Pop. (1901) 4323. It is the highest See also:village in Sardinia, and situated among See also:fine scenery with some See also:chestnut See also:woods. The See also:church of the See also:Franciscans, built in 1708, contains some curious paintings by See also:local artists. The costumes are extremely picturesque, and are well seen on the See also:day of St See also:John the Baptist, the See also:patron See also:saint. The men's See also:costume is similar to that worn in the See also:district generally; the See also:linen See also:trousers are See also:long and See also:black gaiters are worn. The See also:women See also:wear a See also:white chemise; over that a very small corselet, and over that a red jacket with See also:blue and black See also:velvet facings. The skirt is See also:brown above and red below, with a blue See also:band between the two See also:colours; it is See also:accordion-pleated. Two identical skirts are often worn, one above the other. The unmarried girls wear white kerchiefs, the married women black.

A little to the N. of Fonni, by the high-road, stood the See also:

Roman station of Sorabile, mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary as situated 87 m. from See also:Carales on the road to See also:Olbia. Excavations made in 1879 and 1880 led to the See also:discovery of the remains of this station, arranged See also:round three sides of a courtyard some roo ft. square, including traces of See also:baths and other buildings, and a massive embanking See also:wall above them, some 150 ft. in length, to protect them from landslips (F. Vivanet, in Notizie degli scavi, 1879, 350; 1881, 31), while a See also:discharge certificate (tabula honestae missionis) of sailors who had served in the classis Ravennas was found in some ruins here or hereabouts (id. ib., 1882, 440; T. See also:Mommsen, Corp. inscr. See also:Lat. x. 8325). Near Fonni, too, are several " menhirs " (called pietre celtiche in the district) and other prehistoric remains. (T.
