KAMPEN , a See also:

town in the See also:province of See also:Overysel, See also:Holland, on the See also:left See also:bank of the Ysel, 31 M. above its mouth, and a terminal railway station 8 m. N.W. of See also:Zwolle. It has See also:regular steamboat communication with Zwolle, See also:Deventer, See also:Amsterdam, and See also:Enkhuizen. Pop. (1900), 19,664. Kampen is surrounded by beautiful gardens and promenades in the See also:place of the old See also:city walls, and has a See also:fine See also:river front. The four turreted gateways furnish excellent examples of 16th and 17th See also:century See also:architecture. Of the churches the Bovenkerk (" upper See also:church "), or church of St See also:Nicholas, ranks with the See also:cathedral of See also:Utrecht and the Janskerk at 's Hertogenbosch as one of the three See also:great See also:medieval churches in Holland. It was begun in 1369, and has See also:double aisles, See also:ambulatory and radiating chapels, and contains some finely carved woodwork. The See also:Roman See also:Catholic Buitenkerk (" See also:outer church ") is also a fine See also:building of the 14th century, with See also:good See also:modern panelling. There are many other, though slighter, remains of the See also:ancient churches and monasteries of Kampen; but the most remarkable building is the old town-See also:hall, which is unsurpassed in Holland. It See also:dates from the 14th century, but was partly restored after a See also:fire in 1543.

The exterior is adorned with niched statues and beautiful See also:

iron trellis See also:work See also:round the windows. The old See also:council-chamber is wainscoted in See also:black See also:oak, and contains a remarkable sculptured See also:chimney-piece (1545) and fine See also:wood See also:carving. The town-hall contains the municipal library, collections of See also:tapestry, portraits and antiquities, and valuable archives. See also:relating to the ' town and province. Kampen is the seat of a See also:Christian Reformed theological school, a gymnasium, a higher burgher school, a municipal school of See also:design, and a large See also:orphan-See also:age. There are few or no See also:local taxes, the municipal See also:chest being filled by the revenues derived from the fertile See also:delta-See also:land, the Kampeneiland, which is always being built up at the mouth of the Ysel. There is a considerable, See also:trade in See also:dairy produce; and there are shipyards, rope-walks, a See also:tool factory, See also:cigar factories, See also:paper See also:mills, &c.
