It is the centre of the whole See also:northern and eastern See also:canal systems, and by means of the See also:short canal, the 1A'illemsvaart, which joins the Zwarte Water and the I"sel, has See also:regular steamboat communication with See also:Kampen and See also:Amsterdam. The Groote Kerk, of St See also:Michael (first See also:half of the 15th See also:century) occupies the site of an earlier See also:church of which an interesting 11th-century bas-See also:relief remains. The church contains a richly carved See also:pulpit, the See also:work of See also:Adam Straes See also:van W'eilborch about 1620, and there is besides some See also:good See also:carving and a See also:fine See also:organ (1721). The See also:Roman See also:Catholic church, also dedicated to St Michael, See also:dates from the end of the 14th century. The modernized See also:town See also:hall was originally built in 1448. Mention shculd also be made of the Sassen Poort, one of the old See also:city See also:gates; a gild-See also:house (1J71); the provincial See also:government offices, containing the archives; and a museum of antiquities and natural See also:history. Three See also:miles from Zwolle, on a slight See also:eminence,called the Agnietenberg, or See also:hill of St See also:Agnes, once stood the Augustinian See also:convent in which See also:Thomas a Kempis spent the greatest See also:part of his See also:life and died in 1471. Zwolle has a consider-able See also:trade by See also:river, a large See also:fish See also:market, and the most important See also:cattle market in Holland after See also:Rotterdam.
