Holland, bounded S. and S.W. by See also:Gelderland, N.W. by the Zuider Zee, N. by See also:Friesland and See also:Drente, and E. by the Prussian provinces of See also:Hanover and See also:Westphalia respectively; See also:area 1291 sq. m.; pop. Like Drente on the See also:north and Gelderland on the See also:south, Overysel consists of a sandy See also:flat relieved by hillocks, and is covered with See also:waste stretches of See also:heath and patches of See also:wood and high fen. Along the shores of the Zuider Zee, however, See also:west of the See also:Zwolle-See also:Leeuwarden railway, the See also:country is See also:low-lying and covered for the most See also:part with fertile pasture lands. smith-eastern See also:division of the province called Twente, from See also:Enschede to Ootmarsum, and divides the See also:basin of the Almelosche Aa from the Dinkel and its streams. The river Vecht crosses the province from E. to W. and joins the Zwarte Water, which communicates with the Zuider Zee by the Zwolsche Diep and with the Ysel by the Willemsvaart. Everywhere along the streams is a See also:strip of fertile grass-See also:land, from which See also:agriculture and cattle-rearing have gradually spread over the See also:sand-grounds. A large proportion of the sand-grounds, however, is waste. See also:Forest culture is practised on parts of them, especially in the See also:east, and pigs are largely bred. The deposits of the Salland and the Dinkel streams are found to contain See also:iron ore, which is extracted and forms an See also:article of export to See also:Germany. See also:Peat-digging and fen reclamation have been carried on from an See also:early See also:period, and the area of high fen which formerly covered the portion of the province to the north of the Vecht in the neighbourhood

of Dedemsvaart has been mostly reclaimed. This See also:industry is now most active on the eastern See also:borders between See also:Almelo and See also:Hardenberg, Vriezenveen being the chief fen See also:colony. See also:Cotton-See also:spinning, together with See also:bleaching-See also:works, has come into prominence in the 19th See also:century in the See also:district of Twente. The See also:reason of its isolated See also:settlement here is to be found in the former See also:general practice of See also:weaving as a See also:home See also:craft and its organization as an industry by capitalist Baptist refugees who arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries. The chief See also:town of the province is Zwolle, and other thriving See also:industrial centres are See also:Deventer, famous for its carpets and cake, and Almelo, Enschede, See also:Hengelo and Oldenzaal in Twente. See also:Kampen, Genemuiden, Vollenhove and Blokzyl, on the Zuider Zee, carry on some fishing See also:trade. Near Vollenhove was the See also:castle of Toutenburg, built in 1502–1533 by the famous See also:stadtholder of the See also:emperor See also:Charles V., See also:George Schenk. The castle was demolished in the beginning of the 19th century and the remains are slight. The railway system of the province is supplemented by See also:steam tram-lines between Zwolle, Dedemsvaart and Hardenberg.
