LAREDO , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Webb county, See also:Texas, U.S.A., and a sub-See also:port of entry, on the Rio Grande opposite Nuevo Laredo, See also:Mexico, and 150 M. S. of See also:San See also:Antonio. Pop. (1900) 13,429, of whom 6882 were See also:foreign-See also:born (mostly Mexicans) and 82 negroes; (1910 See also:census) 14,855. It is served by the See also:International & See also:Great See also:Northern, the See also:National of Mexico, the Texas Mexican and the Rio Grande & See also:Eagle Pass See also:railways, and is connected by See also:bridges with Nuevo Laredo. Among the See also:principal buildings are the U.S. See also:Government See also:Building, the City See also:Hall and the County See also:Court See also:House; and the city's institutions include the Laredo See also:Seminary (1882) for boys and girls, the See also:Mercy See also:Hospital, the National Railroad of Mexico Hospital and an Ursuline See also:Convent. Loma Vista See also:Park (65 acres) is a See also:pleasure resort, and immediately W. of Laredo on the Rio Grande is Fort McIntosh (formerly See also:Camp See also:Crawford), a See also:United States military See also:post. Laredo is a jobbing centre for See also:trade between the United States and Mexico, and is a sub-port of entry in the Corpus Christi Customs See also:District. It is situated in a See also:good farming and See also:cattle-raising region, irrigated by See also:water from the Rio Grande. The principal See also:crop is Bermuda onions; in 1909 it was estimated that 1500 acres in the vicinity were devoted to this crop, the See also:average yield per See also:acre being about 20,000 lb. There are See also:coal mines about 25 M. above Laredo on the Rio Grande, and natural See also:gas was discovered about 28 m.

industry. Laredo was named from the seaport in See also:Spain, and was founded in 1767 as a Mexican See also:town; it originally included what is now Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and was See also:long the only Mexican town on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river. It was captured in 1846 by a force of Texas Rangers, and in 1847 was occupied by U.S. troops under See also:General See also:Lamar. In 1852 it was chartered as a city of Texas. LA ROLE, a town of See also:south-western See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Gironde, on the right bank of the Gironde, 38 m. S.E. of See also:Bordeaux by See also:rail. Pop. (1906) 3469. La Reole See also:grew up See also:round a monastery founded in the 7th or 8th See also:century, which was reformed in the 11th century and took the name of See also:Regula, whence that of the town. A See also:church of the end of the 112th century and some of the buildings (18th century) are left. There is also a town hall of the 12th and 14th centuries.

order of See also:Richelieu, but remains dating from the 12th and 14th centuries are to be seen, as well as a ruined See also:chateau built by See also:Henry II. of See also:England. La Reole has a sub-prefecture, a tribunal of first instance, a communal See also:college and an agricultural school. The town is the centre of. the district in which the well-known breed of Bazadais cattle is reared. It is an agricultural See also:market and carries on trade in the See also:wine of the region together with liqueur distillery and the manufacture of casks, rope, brooms, &c.
