PORTADOWN , a See also:

market See also:town of See also:county See also:Armagh, See also:Ireland, on the See also:river See also:Bann and the See also:Great See also:Northern railway, 25 In. W.S.W. of See also:Belfast. Pop. (1901), 10,092. It is a junction of lines from See also:Dublin, See also:Clones and See also:Omagh. The Bann, which is connected with the See also:Newry See also:Canal and falls into Lough See also:Neagh 5 M. See also:north of the town, is navigable for vessels of go tons See also:burden. It is crossed at Portadown by a See also:stone See also:bridge of seven See also:arches, originally built in 1764, but since then re-erected. The manufacture of See also:linen and See also:cotton is carried on, and there is a considerable See also:trade in pork, See also:grain and See also:farm produce. In the reign of See also:Charles I. the See also:manor was bestowed on See also:John Obyns, who erected a See also:mansion and a few houses, which were the beginning of the town. A grain-market was established in 1780. The town is governed by an See also:urban See also:district See also:council.
